The Design for Six Sigma Certification, also called DFSS Certification, is designed to test your knowledge of Six Sigma with new-process design principles.  DFSS uses the Six Sigma methodology to develop new products, services, or processes.  The main objective of DFSS is to “design it right the first time” to avoid redoing or redesigning a new process.

Many industries find DFSS a great match for marketing, product, and new process development.  It's now used heavily in industries like logistics, finance, marketing, manufacturing, information technology, and more.  DFSS reviews conceptual vulnerabilities and operational vulnerabilities while infusing quality design principles during the initial process design phase.  Unlike a regular Six Sigma project which focuses on fixing an existing process, DFSS determines the needs of the custom, then designs a process to meet those needs.

DFSS uses processes similar to Six Sigma's DMAIC process.  The most common is the DMADV process, which stands for Define, Measure, Analyze, Design, and Verify.  It creates a new process using Six Sigma principles to help ensure "waste" is mitigated in the initial process design.  Having your Design for Six Sigma Certification will highlight that you have an understanding of the different implementation options of DFSS and how they can be applied.

What is Included for the price of $199.95?
  • Online study material to prepare for exam.
  • MSI Certification exam, completed online.
  • Mailing of certificate & transcripts once certified.

Are There Prerequisites?
It is recommended that you have an understanding of Lean and Six Sigma principles before taking the Design for Six Sigma Certification, however it is not required.  Members who have a Six Sigma Green Belt or higher will generally gain the most from this certification.  The DFSS certification training course includes all of the course work required to study for and pass the final exam.

Is the DFSS Certification Test Difficult?
To properly implement DFSS, users must have a basic understanding of Six Sigma principles so that they can properly design a new process with Six Sigma components worked into the process.  This test is open-note, however it is also timed, so you will not have much time to look up answers to questions.  It is very important that you study and understand the material prior to taking the test or you will not pass.

How in-depth is the training?
The Design for Six Sigma Certification training material includes all of the information you will need to have an understanding of a DFSS implementation process.  It is not designed to make you an expert on all facets of Lean or DFSS, but rather prepare you for the certification exam.  This professional development course was designed to teach someone with little to no knowledge of DFSS the basic skills needed to develop a new process using DFSS methods.  Many executive jobs today require that their employees have at least a basic understanding of "Six Sigma".  For an example, click on this job search link to see how many positions mention the words "Design for Six Sigma".

How long is the training course?
The training course is self-paced. Time to complete and fully comprehend will vary with every individual. It may take several days or weeks of study before you feel comfortable to take the final test. You may take the final exam as soon as you're ready. You have 1 year from the date of purchase to complete the course.

Are there additional books I can order?
Yes, MSI offers digital books for those who would like to order additional materials to assist with their studies.  These books are not required, but will help you prepare for the certification exam:

How is the exam structured?
This certification exam is timed with a limit of 2 hours.  The exam is completed online from home or work.  You may take the exam as soon as you are ready, it does not need to be scheduled in advance.  All questions are multiple choice.

What will I receive after I pass my test?
You will be mailed a Certificate Of Completion, as well as a letter of congratulations and two copies of our training verification letters which you can give to employers who request it. The certificate is heavy-stock, cream paper suitable for framing. [View Example]

Reviews:
"We wanted to design new manufacturing processes at our company so we certified several employees with MSI's DFSS certification program.  The program definitely gave them a good base with which to work from." - Jan G.

"I wanted to make sure I had a strong understanding of process improvement since it is used so heavily in the manufacturing industry.  I've taken the Continuous Improvement Certification, Kaizen Certification, and the Design for Six Sigma Certification.  I enjoy all of MSI's programs and plan to take some more." - Ramesh W.
